Bill Belichick: Strategy and Influence

That game was unforgettable, in part because of how poorly the Patriots played on ESPN’s Monday Night Football, which ignited a sharp media reaction about the team’s future and if Belichick had surrounded quarterback Tom Brady with enough talent as the Patriots dropped to 2-2. It also sparked Belichick’s memorable “on to Cincinnati” comment that became a rallying point for the team over the rest of the season, which culminated in a Super Bowl championship.
“It was a pretty dominant performance by Kansas City, so I’m sure that there are things from that game that they may try to do or that they may feel like they can still do or want to do,” Belichick said Sunday of the last meeting between the clubs. “We’ll definitely have to take that into consideration.”
In 1979, Belichick began a 12-year stint with the New York Giants alongside head coach Ray Perkins as a defensive assistant and special teams coach. He added linebackers coaching to his duties in 1980 and was named defensive coordinator in 1985 under head coach Bill Parcells, who had replaced Perkins in 1983. The Giants won Super Bowls following the 1986 and 1990 seasons. His defensive game plan from the New York Giants’ 20–19 upset of the Buffalo Bills in Super Bowl XXV is now in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
“There have been 25 games played since then,” he said. “It’s definitely a game to look at, but there are a couple thousand plays on either side of the ball. I think you look at it, there are things we can take from it, [but] there are some things that I’d say are somewhat outdated just based on the players and the personnel.
“So it has relevance. We’re certainly going to have to prepare and coach the team a lot better than we did that night.”
Patriots players have had the weekend off and are scheduled to return to Gillette Stadium on Monday. Practices are scheduled for Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, before the standard day-before-game walk-through on Friday.
