Next Thing for Jamie Collins and His Extension

Collins, the team’s top pick from 2013 (second round, 52nd overall), is signed through the 2016 season. He is currently scheduled to earn a base salary of $917,865 in 2016, which is a real bargain for the team.
If he didn’t block the kick, the Patriots would be up by 6, and if the Colts recovered the onside kick attempt, they’d only need a touchdown to tie, and the extra point to win. On November 6, 2015, Collins was diagnosed with an undisclosed illness. Collins was inactive for the next 4 games (Weeks 9-12). On December 4, 2015, Collins confirmed he recovered from the illness. He returned to action on Dec. 6, racking up 8 tackles and forcing a fumble in a 35-28 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. On December 22nd, he was named to his first Pro Bowl.
“We wanted [Revis] in our system, and we have certain disciplines. We had hoped it worked out. It didn’t. We just don’t think about short-term decisions. For example, next year we have three very good young defensive players coming up and we have to factor that,” Kraft said in March of 2015.
With the Patriots now eligible to negotiate an extension with Collins, it adds another layer to the unique business-based dynamic of having three top defenders with expiring contracts after the 2016 season.
