Dianna Marie Russini of ESPN reported Gronkowski’s injury “is being described as more of a bruise of the knee than a tear,” citing sources. Russini added Gronkowski is “week to week.”
Gronkowski missed the first three games of the 2008 season, but later recorded 47 receptions for 672 yards and a team-best ten touchdowns. Five of his touchdowns were scored in his first two games. He twice was named the John Mackey National Tight End of the Week, including his performance in a failed comeback bid against Oregon, when he caught 12 passes for 143 yards. He set the school records for a tight end for single-game, single-season, and career receptions, yards, and touchdowns. Gronkowski was named an Associated Press third-team All-American and All-Pac-10 first-team tight end.
Prior to the 2009 season, he was placed on the watchlist for the Lombardi Award, which is awarded to the most outstanding college football lineman or linebacker. He missed his junior season in 2009 due to back surgery, which caused his draft stock to fall.
He added 113 yards and a touchdown on Oct. 29 in a 36-7 win over the Miami Dolphins.[32] On November 29th, 2015 during the New England Patriots and Denver Broncos game, which would eventually be New England first loss of the season, Gronkowski had to be carted off the field after a right knee injury that occurred in the 4th quarter. Initial reports said that the injury appeared to be less serious than it originally looked.
NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported Gronkowski “is unlikely to miss more than one game, I’m told. In fact, he may not even miss that.”
First, there was the broken forearm in November 2012 and the subsequent surgeries and infection into the spring of 2013. Then, he tore his ACL and MCL in December 2013, knocking him out for the rest of that season.
However, Gronkowski played in all but one of the Patriots’ regular-season games in 2014, when he caught 82 passes for 1,124 yards and 12 touchdowns. Although that didn’t quite match his ridiculous stats from 2011, he still led the team in receiving yards and receiving TDs.
Losing the 26-year-old is a major blow to the Patriots’ passing game. Brady now lacks that one go-to receiver who can change a game. Julian Edelman is out due to a knee injury, and while Danny Amendola is a capable pass-catcher, he cannot scare a defense in the same way Gronkowski can, especially in the red zone.
